About the Chubu Area

The Chubu area is located in the central part of Japan's Honshu Island.
The nine prefectures are divided into three regions: Hokuriku, Central Highlands, and Tokai, each with its own
unique topography, climate, culture, and industry.
The Japanese Alps in the center of the region make it a popular tourist destination.
While the Tokai area on the Pacific Ocean side has many sunny days and little snowfall, the Hokuriku area
on the Sea of Japan side has heavy snowfall in winter, and the Central Highlands has an inland climate
with cool summers and is known as a summer resort.
The population is mainly concentrated in coastal areas and basins, and the Chukyo area centered on Nagoya
is the economic and cultural center of the area.
The city has abundant tourist resources, including Ise Jingu Shrine, the gassho-zukuri villages of Shirakawa-go,
Nagoya Castle, the old townscape of Hida Takayama, and many other famous sites.
In terms of transportation, the Tokaido Shinkansen, Hokuriku Shinkansen, and major expressways run east to west,
and Central Japan International Airport (Centrair) connect Nagoya to the rest of the country and abroad.
Here are some sightseeing spots that can be accessed on a day trip from Nagoya!
Takayama (Gifu Prefecture)

We recommend taking the train to Takayama to enjoy the spectacular scenery while traveling!
From JR Nagoya Station, it takes about two and a half hours to arrive at Takayama Station, where you will continue
to ride the “Hida” limited express train through the mountains of Gifu.
A few minutes' walk from the station will take you to an old townscape that retains the atmosphere of a castle town
dating back to the Edo period.
Here you can enjoy traditional buildings, souvenirs, and local gourmet food.
This is a must-see spot in Takayama, where you can stroll around while experiencing history and culture.
Takayama's morning market is also one of the three major morning markets in Japan, Miyagawa Asaichi and
Jinyamae Asaichi being the most famous. They are open from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., which is enough time to
get there even from Nagoya.
They are popular among many tourists for their abundance of fresh vegetables, fruits, and local specialties.
A walk in the fresh early morning air is a wonderful way to experience the charm of Hida Takayama.
Recommended spots
■Takayama Sanmachi Traditional Building Preservation District (old streets)
■Takayama Shrine
■Miyagawa Morning Market
■Hida Takayama Retro Museum
There is also an express bus service from Nagoya Station that takes about 2 hours and 40 minutes
and is relatively inexpensive!

Gero Onsen (Gifu Prefecture)

Like Takayama, Gero is less than two hours by express train from JR Nagoya Station.
Direct buses are available, but access by train is recommended due to the scenic views along the way!
Gero has three components, consisting of historical buildings, natural scenery and hot spring culture.
As you exit the station, you will find the Gero Onsen(hot spring) Street, where you can enjoy the retro atmosphere
and gourmet food.
It is just the right size, neither too large nor too small, and is highly satisfying.
Gero Onsen Gyoshomura is an open-air museum with traditional Hida Gassho-zukuri houses,
where important cultural properties are also preserved.
After exploring, enjoy a day trip to the hot spring baths.
Enjoy a beer after bathing and take the express train to Nagoya in no time!

Shirakawa-go (Gifu Prefecture)

Direct highway buses are convenient to Shirakawa-go! It takes 2.5 hours
from the Meitetsu Bus Center at Nagoya Station.
However, it is also accessible by bus from Takayama Station and can be visited in combination
with Takayama sightseeing!
Shirakawa-go is a mountain village in Gifu whose traditional Gassho-zukuri houses are registered as a
UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The houses, with their steeply pitched thatched roofs, were designed to withstand the heavy winter snowfalls,
and were named “Gassho-Zukuri” because their shape resembles the clasped hands of Buddhist monks in prayer.
More than 100 gassho-zukuri houses are clustered in the Hagino area, and in winter,
the houses are lit up and snow-covered, creating a fantastic atmosphere.
There is a mutual aid organization called “Yui” among the residents,
and the custom of jointly re-thatching roofs still exists.
Shirakawa-go is a region that has preserved its unique culture in a harsh natural environment,
and is a popular tourist destination.

Kyoto (Kyoto Prefecture)

Kyoto, one of Japan's most popular tourist destinations, can be reached in 40 minutes
by taking the Tokaido Shinkansen bullet train from Nagoya Station!
The city's sightseeing is mainly done by city bus, but I recommend renting a bicycle.
You can feel the breeze of Kyoto and access major historical sights without being affected by traffic jams.
I recommend going to Nishiki Market for food and shopping!

The trip takes about 50 minutes!
You can also take the Kintetsu Limited Express, which takes only 2.5 hours.
The best thing to do in Osaka is to enjoy gourmet food.
The most popular food in Osaka are konamon (flour dumplings) and kushikatsu (skewered pork cutlets),
and your dreams will be filled with excitement.
Universal Studios Japan is also within a one-day trip!
With a 1-day pass, you can enjoy Universal Studios Japan from morning till night.

Ise, Ise Jingu Shrine (Mie Prefecture)

Ise is a city of faith and history that developed around Ise Jingu, the largest Shinto facility in Japan,
and is about 1.5 hours from Nagoya Station by Kintetsu limited express!
Ise Jingu, officially called “Jingu”, is the highest Shinto facility in Japan, consisting of 125 shrines.
The two main shrines are the Imperial Grand Shrine (Inner Shrine), which enshrines Amaterasu Omikami,
the ancestral deity of the imperial family, and the Toyoke Grand Shrine (Outer Shrine),
which enshrines Toyoke Omikami, the guardian deity of food, clothing and shelter.
The shrine pavilions and treasures have been rebuilt every 20 years for more than 1,300 years
since Emperor Motoi (7th century), when the ritual “Shikinen Sengu” was held.
The official order of visitation is from the Outer Shrine to the Inner Shrine.
This place is the spiritual pillar of Japan as the “main sect of Shinto” and is the one and only sacred place
where nature, history, and faith are fused together.

Hakuba (Nagano Prefecture)

From JR Nagoya Station, take the limited express train “Shinano” and transfer to the JR Oito Line
at Matsumoto Station to reach Hakuba.
Although the train ride is long (3.5 hours), you can enjoy spectacular views from the train windows
as it weaves between the mountains of the Japanese Alps.
From Matsumoto Station, you can also change to a bus to Kamikochi.
In winter, visitors can enjoy winter sports in the fine powder snow that cannot be found in Okumino.
In summer, the refreshing climate makes Kamikochi a popular summer resort.
The swings that make you feel as if you are flying through the air will make you feel very liberated.
